How to size for an Orchestra Instrument
Before renting a string instrument, it’s essential to determine the correct size for the player to ensure comfort and proper technique. At Heid Music, we provide specialized tools for sizing violins, violas, and cellos, ensuring every musician gets the perfect fit. A properly sized instrument fosters better sound production and ease of play, helping the student progress confidently. For added assurance, your school director or private teacher can also assist in confirming the ideal size.
Here's how to measure if you don't have an instrument
* TIP - If you are in-between the sizes below, be sure to size down instead of up.
How to size for a Cello
Have the player extend their left arm completely straight (but not overextended) with no bend in the elbow or wrists.
The ideal size cello for a child is found by measuring the distance between the base of the neck and the left wrist. The hand should be opened, and the arm held out perpendicular to the body (but not overextended) with the shoulder relaxed. With this measurement and height measurement use the table below to establish the correct cello size.
We do not recommend playing on instruments with ‘growing room’ as this can have a detrimental effect on technique, form and posture.
*For an upright bass, the musician will be measured by a director or Heid Music employee.
