How to Size for an Orchestra Instrument

Choose the Right Instrument Size
Before renting a string instrument, it’s essential to determine the correct size for the player to ensure comfort and proper technique. At Heid Music, we provide specialized tools for sizing violins, violas, and cellos, ensuring every musician gets the perfect fit.
A properly sized instrument fosters better sound production and ease of play, helping the student progress confidently. For added assurance, your school director or private teacher can also assist in confirming the ideal size.

Here's how to measure if you don't have an instrument
* TIP - If you are in-between the sizes below, be sure to size down instead of up.
How to size for a Violin or Viola
1 - To measure for a Violin or Viola have the student extend their arm so it is parallel to the floor and directly in line with their shoulders.
2 - Next have them move their arm forward so that it's at a 45 degree angle and have their palm faced up.
3 - Put the beginning of the yardstick (preferred) or measuring tape at the base of the student's neck then measure out to the wrist. Some directors prefer to measure to the middle of the palm.
For fractional size violas they are often violins strung as violas, so use violin sizing. Use this list to see viola sizing equivalent to violin.
Full-size violin = 14" viola
¾ violin = 13i viola
½ violin = 12" viola
¼ violin = 11i viola
How to size for a Cello
1 - Have the player extend their left arm completely straight (but not overextended) with no bend in the elbow or wrists.
2 - The ideal size cello for a child is found by measuring the distance between the base of the neck and the left wrist. The hand should be opened, and the arm held out perpendicular to the body (but not overextended) with the shoulder relaxed. With this measurement and height measurement use the table below to establish the correct cello size.
We do not recommend playing on instruments with ‘growing room’ as this can have a detrimental effect on technique, form and posture.
*For an upright bass, the musician will be measured by a director or Heid Music employee.
